Page breaks in invoices and estimates

An invoice or estimate that does not fit on one page is split across several, and the editor draws a dashed line wherever that split will fall. Its label says which page starts below it, so the shape of the printed document is visible while you are still writing it.

The line appears only when the document runs to more than one page. A document that fits on a single page has nothing to mark.

The line moves as you type

Every change to the document is re-measured a moment after you stop typing. Adding a line item, writing a longer description or switching to a theme with different margins can each move a break, and the marker follows.

The marker is only a marker, so it does not change spacing, page size, or anything else about the document. It stays visible if you switch Preview document on, but it never appears in the PDF or in what your customer sees.

Where a break can fall

A break normally falls between two line items, because a line item is kept whole. Its name, description and SKU stay together on one page rather than being torn apart.

A long description or long notes are the exception. When a description reaches the end of a page, the printed page ends between two of its lines of text and the rest continues on the next page, with at least two lines on each side. In the editor the dashed line is then drawn inside the text, at the line the printed page starts with.

The page count matches the PDF

The label counts the pages of the finished document, so Page 2 of 3 means the PDF will have three pages. The editor and the PDF measure the same way, and the count you see while writing is the count you get in the file you download or email.
